Also, I have fanart! Rizaki717 has drawn some illustrations for Chapter 1 and posted them on his DeviantArt Account (click here). Specifically, he has posted a picture of Kirielle wake-up scene, Ilsa’s visit, The ever-mysterious bicycle girl, Benisek, Taiven, Magic staff and Xvim’s wonderful lesson. Taiven doesn’t really look like that in my head, but hey. My favorite is the Xvim scene – the expressions are perfect.

PocketSleuth has done a fair amount of fanart for MoL, featuring Zach, Zorian, Kirielle, and more. The collection can be seen in his ‘Mother of Learning’ section here.

LUCA has done some drawings of Zorian. Sadly, of the two, only one is still up. You can find it here.

One of my readers is doing a Russian translation of the story. You can read it here. This is a fully completed translation.

Some helpful tables made by Ull (who also did the audiobook up above):
MoL Character Appearance Chart: Lists all characters that appear in a particular chapter. If you ever wondered when a particular character showed up or when it was last mentioned, this will help.
MoL Time Table: Tries to keep track of how much time had passed in the story. That is, how many restarts did Zorian live though, and how long did they last (if they were cut short).

        I will try to draw more fan art when I have some time! You put a lot of love and effort into MoL and to me, there’s no better way to show my appreciation than to create fan art. I could tell you how much I liked it, but showing you how much I liked it would say a lot more.

      • Oops, it was supposed to be Xvim but I pressed the wrong key by accident. Thanks for pointing it out!

        Is there any official depiction of Zorian’s appearance? I looked at the other fanart and read the description from the story, but I was unsure about the details so I made it up – that’s why I gave Zorian a school uniform blazer; I didn’t know what other clothes to give him. If there is any artwork where you have decided “This is what Zorian looks like”, it would good to know for the next time I do an art piece. Or if you are a “use your imagination and remember he has glasses” person, that’s fine too.

      • I am very much in the ‘use your imagination’ category, which is why I never bothered to describe people too much. Turns out people don’t really like this much, so I probably should have put in wordier descriptions. Oh well. Anyway, the only thing definitive about Zorian is that he is thin, has glasses, and that his hair and eyes are brown.

      • I wonder if you’ve ever considered doing a fan art contest where you take a bunch of submissions for different characters and choose the one you like the best as the official character likeness.

      • Can’t say that I have. To be honest, I prefer to have people produce fanart ‘organically’ rather than trying to force it like that.

        Besides, as popular as my story is, I don’t think it’s at a level where I can just announce a contest like that and not look a bit premature/full of myself.

  4. I looked around here, on fictionpress, and on the fan run wiki and couldn’t find a pronunciation guide for the names of characters or locations. Your real name appears to Spanish in origin; I can see how some names like Quatach-Ichl and Ibasan seem to be influenced by Spanish, but I would really appreciate knowing how to properly say the names of the characters in the story.

    I guess one decent example would be Kirielle Kazinski. Kazinski is pretty strait forward, but the name seems influenced by Russian or Polish (this coming from a person with no experience with either language). What about Kirielle though? I’m guessing the “elle” is pronounced the same as in the name “Belle”, but it could “El – Lay” or “El – Lee” for instance. Are both of the “i’s” in “Kiri” pronounced with the same sound? The phonetics of how I read her name in my head would be “Kear – Ee – El”.

    If you have the time and effort to spare, a pronunciation guide for the more esoteric names would be appreciated (at least by me it would be). =)

    • I’m Croatian, actually. That’s why many of the names sound vaguely Slavic. Though I’m not really consistent about that. Anyway, words are generally read in Croatian exactly as they are written, so you can usually get an idea of how names are pronounced by choosing ‘Croatian’ in Goggle Translate and having it vocalize the word in question. X is Ks.

      Yeah, ‘elle’ is basically what you say, and you are reading her name in your head correctly.

      I’ll keep the pronunciation guide in mind.

  9. When you’re done writing the story, would you like someone to do some editing for you? I notice things like typos that get past spell-check because it’s a real word, just not the correct one; missing or duplicated words; things like that. I would enjoy reading over the completed story again anyway, so if an editorial reading would be useful to you I’d be glad to do it.

    • I have a bunch of people who have expressed interest in post-ending editing. I can’t promise anything but I will keep it in mind. In the meantime, you can just send me any typos you find to my email or as a comment on the story, and I’ll add them to the editing document to be corrected in time.

      Anyway, I feel for you. I keep seeing Croatian users in the unlikeliest of places on the internet. Every time I see a reader from Croatia I am surprised, for instance. I thought there was basically no market for fantasy in our parts of the world.

    That being said I will say the same as I posted in fictionpress, and if possible please answer _/\_

    One of the best I read.

    Despite some people saying that you may be using “repeatable” characters (at least as I understood of your afterword), I don’t really think is true. You could indeed made a larger epilogue. Personally I found kinda unfair for Zorian to not have at least one woman in some point or more than one. But indeed it would be contrary to his character.

    ****Spoilers be warned***
    On this note there are several things I want to tackle. You would expect grey hunter to want Zorian help instead of directing her to the dragon bellow or the primordials. I would like to see her as a familiar or a shapeshifter for Zorian.

    Heck, it would be awesome if he managed to use the abilities of both the plant and the grey hunter. A man can dream right?

    In the same thought Zorian didn’t extract the information of the lich on how to raise his mama reserves since he CLEARLY slipped that he had a way to do it. Or replicate the blessing. Maybe a creature that would devour Mana as a second blood enhancement along with the plant.

    That being said I would like to imagine Zorian using age stoping potion of “silver witch” and the rejuvenation potion. As well as a more perfected soul and mind potion considering he heavy relied on those in the beginning.

    At some point I would like if House Noveda and Kazinski united… Zach and Kirelle had a lot in common. A bargaing should be struck to recover the sovereign gate… So we could see 2 full archmages with relative immortality (Zorian and Zach) founding a new house with psych soul and shapeshifter powers along with tank Mana capabilities. It wouldn’t be that overwhelming since we saw that there are SEVERAL creatures more powerful than them.

    Sadly we didn’t see the epilogue of Zach. It did sadden me a lot. (Shame on you author of this amazing story – said him with sarcasm)

    I don’t think the lich will die or the dragon. And it’s very misterious that since Zach knew they have time travel knowledge they weren’t erased as Divine intervention.

    I couldn’t help but notice that you didn’t explain were the demons ACTUALLY came from.

    Ideally it would be incredibly if House Noveda-Kazinsky made a second accelerated orb with all the Divine keys in it… And isolated partially of the world, maybe with access to one or other gate or some especial ways that hermits would search for them.

    Again I know both of them would be stupid powerful with those things but again I will remember again that there are SEVERAL person’s creatures and entities far more stronger than them. They could be very well the “last shield”, for every new planar alignment.

    That and house Noveda-Kazinsky creating a collective mind as the araneans did. And an improved colony of araneans with the principal colonies aligning together and making an aranean parliament. (A council of several matriarchs)

    I could go on and on but I suppose this was your choice in the end, and I am very happy. Few are the histories that I can feel that make me with fully closure. You got like 95% of that and that’s plenty.

    Thank you for your hard work and please do tell or even send any new chapter for us (I mean ME, if you could I grow VERY fond of the history.).

    May your career in writing be successful as possible.

      On the lore side, some of the ideas you outlines are very… ambitious. Zorian wouldn’t dare turn grey hunter into a familiar, at least at this time, and would probably never become a grey hunter shifter. The reasons for this are many, but they all basically boil down to the grey hunter being way too strong, and thus both of these options are too dangerous and volatile.

      Not sure what to say to the other ideas at this time. I’m glad the story and the articles here fired up your imagination, though! I’m not sure when I’m going to revisit Ersetu in the form of an actual story, but I’ll try to get the word out there when/if I do.

      And yeah, none of the fanfics are there. I only knew of a handful of fanfics, I didn’t know there were 14 of them on AO3. And even the ones I did know about I never linked to, not our of any particular reason, but simply because it never occurred to me. I’ll leave it as it is for now, but I may add a fanfiction section to the post later. Feel free to link to your fanfics in the comments in the meantime.

And if there’s any out there on other sites or discord or something, I don’t even know about them. It’d be great to have a list of all those other ones!

  17. The Mother of Learning has become a favorite book for my wife and me. It features exciting adventures and complex characters. Time travel is always a successful option. The world and mechanics of magic are well developed. We really liked the details and subtle psychology of even the minor characters.

    Most of all we liked the main character. It was a very good decision to make him not something like Zorian’s brother – a famous and talented handsome man, but a simple and at the same time diligent and intelligent teenager. Zorian grows strong through persistence and self-discipline. The message is very useful for young people. It is very sad that the book has not yet been published and translated into all languages. There are already enough stories about the chosen ones. The imperfect Zorian will be close to almost everyone. He can set a truly worthy example.

    We liked the relationship between Zach and Zorian. It is interesting to follow the friendship of two very different people. It develops over the years and gets stronger. The relationship is sincere and lively.

    We would like to thank the author and the Russian translators. Hopefully the author publishes the book so we can put it on the shelf in the bookcase.

    We don’t want to part with the characters, because we love them very much. We decided to write fanfic for the first time! It started with a little romantic AU about Zorian and Taiven in 4-5 chapters. Then Kirielle somehow got there. And then other canon and original characters appeared. Thus, fanfic accidentally expanded into three large parts with new adventures.
    Unfortunately, we do not know English at a good enough level to share fanfiction in this language with you. Although if any of the fans knows Russian and is interested, we will give permission for translation.

    I really love your story. MoL is the best fantasy novel in my life. Thanks for sharing your talent!

    Anyway, I have something to confess, about translations.

    In South Korea, Few years ago, Someone translated MoL ( into Korean) Ch 1 to Ch 92, Without your permission.
    One day I came across the MoL Korean translation stuff in a korean website, and I fell into MoL.

    And then, in 2018, the translator suddenly stopped translation. So I had to read MoL Ch 93 to Epilogue in English.
    After finish the story, I decide to translate Ch 93~Ep into Korean in my own.

    But I couldn’t try (nor even imagine) to get your permission for translation.
    That’s because I was not full translator but just who translated Ch93~Ep only, and I didnt know how to explain about that Ch1~92 translation by another guy.

    In the end, I finished Ch 93~Ep translation without your permission, and uploaded it at a non-profit korean website in December 2020.
